Starting out with weightlifting is particularly confusing when you have no idea where to begin. Aside from learning form and how to properly lift and use the different resistance tools, what you do before and after the gym is equally as important. Ask any fitness buff and they’re sure to agree!

You may choose to add supplements to your routine so you can perform and recover better while lifting weights. They generally fall into one of two categories: pre-workout or post-workout supplements. Your pre-workout will generally feature some form of caffeine for an energy boost, but as far as weightlifting is concerned, another ingredient you may want to look out for is creatine.

According to Harvard Health, supplementing existing creatine in the muscles “can enhance exercise capacity” and increase the amount of reps you can safely do during strength training. And as for your post-workout recovery, protein is key! It’s essential in muscle recovery and reducing soreness after hitting the gym. With these two types of supplements, you may feel like a lifting pro in no time — and we’ve sourced the absolute best in each category below on Amazon!

Pre-Workout Supplements

LADDER Sport Pre Workout Powder

We love that this pre-workout comes portioned out already, so you can just throw them into your gym bag if you’re in a rush!

Kaged Muscle Pre Workout Powder

Shoppers say the amount of caffeine in this supplement is just right — it won’t cause jitters like some higher dosages.

Thorne Creatine

If your sole focus is on building lean muscle and increasing the amount you can lift, this is likely the supplement for you. The only ingredient is creatine which, as mentioned earlier, is the compound most commonly used for amping up weightlifting capabilities. You can choose your dosage with this supplement to suit your needs!

BlackMarket PRE Workout

If you’re weary about trying out creatine but still want a great pre-workout to support strength training, this is the ideal option!

RSP NUTRITION AminoLean Pre Workout Powder

This pre-workout doesn’t contain creatine like the supplement we previously mentioned, but the formula does include ingredients to help support natural weight management!

Post-Workout Recovery

Hush & Hush PlantYourDay Vegan Protein Powder

This supplement boasts 17g of protein per serving, plus a powerful blend of supergreens, superfoods, pre- and probiotics that will benefit your overall health far beyond just muscle recovery!

KOS Vegan Protein Powder

Each 20g protein serving of this powder clocks in at just 150 calories, which is excellent for anyone who’s looking for a supplement that can also aid in weight management!

Alani Nu Whey Protein Powder

For a max protein boost, check out this powder which has a whopping 23 grams per scoop — plus comes in seriously yummy flavors like confetti cake and fruity cereal!

Ora Organic Vegan Protein Powder

This is another protein powder option which has superfoods included in the formula, plus amino-acids, to aid in your post-workout recovery.

Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein Unflavored Powder

This unflavored powder is fantastic if you prefer making fruit smoothies and don’t want the random (and potentially unpleasant) mixture of flavors you may receive from a vanilla protein supplement.

Better Blends Oat and Collagen Nutritional Protein Powder

The collagen included in this protein powder gives you added hair, skin and nail beauty benefits — if that’s what you’re looking for!

Bonus Pick:

YUNI Beauty Muscle Recovery Gel

To prevent your muscles from aching after a particularly intense workout, this recovery gel can help ease the pain or prevent it from happening to begin with!

After a three-year pandemic hiatus, RuPaul’s DragCon U.K. — one of the world’s largest drag conferences — returned to London this past weekend. The three-day event, which drew approximately 150 drag performers and thousands of fans of all ages from around the world, took place as the art form has been embroiled in controversy in the United States.

While drag has attained mainstream popularity across the U.S. — due in large part to the wildly successful “RuPaul’s Drag Race” franchise — critics have argued that children shouldn’t be exposed to it, and lawmakers across the U.S. have proposed bills trying to keep kids away.

But many of those who attended RuPaul’s DragCon U.K., held at  Exhibition Centre London, maintained that drag, as a whole, generally creates a safe space where children can enjoy over-the-top performances and, in some cases, enjoy the freedom to be themselves.

Diggory Alberts, an 11-year-old U.K. native, said he lives and breathes “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and prides himself on perfecting his dance skills so he can excel as his drag persona, Ruby Rose.

During the second day of the conference, while drag icon RuPaul was deejaying, Diggory showed his best dance moves on the stage —  including death-drops and cartwheels — while hundreds of onlookers cheered him on. He said the experience was “amazing,” especially because there were “a bunch of other young kids who are here living their life and enjoying it.”

Diggory, who attended the conference with his 25-year-old sister, said he struggles with the idea that adults, and particularly lawmakers, would want to keep kids away from drag.

“You can be whoever you want to be,” he said, after criticizing lawmakers who are trying to prevent minors from attending drag events.

Lady Camden, a drag performer and a finalist on season 14 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” said she had no outlets to express herself when she was younger and would have loved to have access to something like a DragCon event (there have also been DragCons in New York and Los Angeles).

“I wish I had let myself be gayer and feminine when I was a kid,” she said. “I wish I could go back in time and just let myself play with Barbies and let myself wear pink, talk however I want to talk, love whoever I want to love.”

Many parents brought their children to DragCon U.K. not only because they’re massive fans of the franchise, but also to expose their kids to a diversity of art and people early on.

“I want her to be able to accept people from all walks and think in an open-minded way and accept all diversities really,” said Trish, a London resident who brought her 5-year-old daughter, Maxine.

Danielle Gostling, who lives in Kent, England, brought her daughter Dorothy, 6, to the conference. She said there’s “nothing overtly graphic at all” about the art form.

“It’s about fun and expression and love and equality, and that’s very important for children to know about,” she said.

Over the past several months there have been at least six bills introduced by state lawmakers across the U.S. seeking to restrict where and for whom drag can be performed. These measures are particularly geared at preventing minors from attending drag performances.

“That’s just wrong,” Dorothy Gostling said of the proposed bills. “You can’t stop drag!”

Gemini, an 18-year-old drag performer based in Surrey, England, who has been practicing the art form since she was 12, said drag is “empowering.” The teen, who participated in DragCon U.K.’s Kids Fashion Show on Sunday sporting a pink velour tracksuit, credited drag with helping her conquer emotional difficulties and boosting her self confidence.

“As a young gay person in school, you’re very often bullied, but for me, doing the drag and stuff helped me through that and made me think, ‘I can be me, and I can strut and be whoever I want,’” she said.

Kitty Claus

Kitty Scott Claus, a contestant on season three of “RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K.,” succinctly summed up the sentiment that appeared to be widespread at the conference.

“Drag is for everyone, and it’s to be enjoyed by everyone,” she said. “If you enjoy drag, it shouldn’t matter your age.”

Opening arguments kicked off Monday in the federal trial of Sayfullo Saipov, the Uzbek immigrant who in 2017 plowed a rented pickup truck on a New York City bike path, killing eight people in its path of destruction.

The Oct. 31 attack was the deadliest terrorist attack in New York City since Sept. 11, 2001. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, marking the first federal death penalty trial under President Joe Biden’s administration.

Saipov was charged with 28 counts including eight counts of murder, attempted murder, and one count of providing and attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State terrorist group, or ISIS. He pleaded not guilty in November 2017.

The prosecution shared opening arguments Monday morning in New York court before a room filled with survivors and relatives of the victims who were killed.

Prosecutors spoke of the “destruction and horror of that day” and mentioned how Saipov allegedly plowed his victims down to become a member of ISIS.

The judge said the trial should last three months.

Police said Saipov, then 29, was inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group, or ISIS, in launching the attack.

He told the FBI after the rampage that he “felt good about what he did” and wanted to kill as many people as possible, according to the criminal complaint. He planned an attack for about a year, the complaint said.

How the attack unfolded

In the attack, Saipov rented a white Home Depot pickup truck in Passaic, New Jersey, and drove it into Manhattan where the streets were filling up with Halloween festivities.

He headed south toward the West Side Highway cycle path, a tree-lined route along the Hudson River, veered onto the cycle path near Houston Street and continued at a high speed for almost a mile, indiscriminately striking cyclists and people in his path.

Saipov struck a school bus outside Stuyvesant High School, jumped out and shouted “Allahu Akbar” — meaning “God is great” in Arabic and brandished a pellet gun and paintball gun, officials said. He was then confronted by a police officer who shot him in the abdomen, and Saipov was detained and hospitalized.

Investigators later found a note that Saipov left in the truck, claiming the attack was in the name of ISIS.

Six of the fatal victims were tourists, five of them Argentine and one Belgian. Two Americans were also killed: Darren Drake, 32, of New Milford, New Jersey, and Nicholas Cleves, 23, of New York. Twelve people were injured in the attack.

Three interpreters, one for Saipov, one for the people from Belgium and another for those from Argentina were present in the courtroom Monday.

Saipov arrived in U.S. in 2010, appeared to ‘self-radicalize’

Saipov arrived in the U.S. in 2010 from Uzbekistan, made a living driving long-haul trucks and for Uber, and lived with his wife in Paterson, New Jersey.

He was born in the capital of Tashkent and came to the United States on a visa through a diversity immigrant visa program in 2010, according to the Uzbek Consulate and U.S. authorities. The program, according to the State Department, allows the arrival of a limited number of applicants from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States.

Records indicated that within months he obtained commercial truck licenses in New Jersey then in Florida, and registered two automobile-related businesses in Ohio.

He had, at some point, “self-radicalized” after consuming ISIS propaganda, a federal law enforcement official previously told NBC News.

MOSCOW, Idaho — Some students at the University of Idaho will be carrying mace and heavy flashlights when they return to campus this week for a new semester, less than two weeks after a suspect was arrested in the murders of four fellow students.

As they unpacked bags and boxes over the weekend, students at the University of Idaho and Washington State University in nearby Pullman, where the suspect had been enrolled, expressed relief and caution in the aftermath of the arrest following a six-week search.

Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, was arrested Dec. 30 and charged with four counts of murder in the Nov. 13 stabbing deaths of Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Arizona; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho.

At the University of Idaho, where classes begin Wednesday, senior Lucy Selph was moving into her on-campus residence, less than 10 minutes from the off-campus house where the victims were stabbed to death with what investigators believe was a large, fixed-blade knife.

Among her must-have accessories this semester is a heavy flashlight with a strobe function that doubles as a baton. It’s one of several safety items wary students said they would be carrying.

“I’m already a pretty cautious person, so I think this is just going to reinforce my antisocial behavior,” she said jokingly.

A self-described loner, Selph said that despite the arrest, she will likely take extra precautions during her final semester at the university, including always keeping her flashlight nearby when it’s dark.

Selph’s mother, Heather, said she has been anxious about sending her daughter back to campus even with a suspect in jail.

“Oh my gosh — that’s all I can say,” Heather Selph said as tears filled her eyes. “Kids just shouldn’t be afraid to go to school.

“I’m a teacher and with everything in the news … schools should be a safe place.”

University of Idaho sophomore Michaela Green, who recently transferred from Boise State University, said she intends to take a self-defense class offered by the school later this week.

Green’s mother, Jennifer, said she feels better knowing her daughter will learn how to protect herself should the unthinkable happen.

“I didn’t want to necessarily talk her out of transferring, but I was hoping he would get caught,” Jennifer Green said. “They’ve done so much for school safety, I now feel 100% fine. I’m excited for her to start the semester.”

At the time of the murders, Kohberger had been working toward his doctorate in criminal justice and criminology at WSU in Pullman, a short drive across the state line from Moscow.

At WSU, where classes started Monday, freshman Brandon Moore said he plans to adjust his habits on campus, including walking with friends at night and always locking his door.

“It’s still a little scary even knowing they caught the guy,” he said.

Koryn Damiano, a sophomore at WSU who took classes in the same building as Kohberger, said she was “creeped out” after learning she could have walked right past him without realizing it.

“It’s terrifying just knowing that someone our age on our campus is capable of something like that,” she said. “It definitely makes you more aware of everyone around you.”

Damiano said she shares a sense of relief that the suspect has been caught.

“We’re all excited to be back and feel better knowing he’s locked up,” she said.

WSU freshman Brynn Nygaard walked briskly to her dorm room Saturday afternoon, wearing just one earbud, a new habit that allows her to listen to music while maintaining situational awareness.

“It’s important as a young woman in any scenario,” she said. “I also have mace and am just being really cautious and alert.”

Nygaard said that while she feels relatively safe returning to campus, her mother needed some convincing. “I tried to console her,” she said.

“Those kids were my age,” she added. “Seeing someone lose their child in such a tragic and horrible way probably affected” my mother, she said, “so I just wanted to let her know that the police were doing their best work to solve this and find the person who did it.”

Officials at both campuses have attempted to assuage the fears of students and parents heading into a new term by beefing up campus patrols and working more closely with local and state law enforcement agencies, among other measures.

At the University of Idaho, students will have the option to take classes in self-defense, vigilance and stalking awareness. Although the school allowed students to finish last semester remotely after the murders, remote learning will be limited this semester as most students are expected to return to campus, the Idaho Statesman reported.

Personnel have been added to the school’s security team and local law enforcement will increase patrols on campus and in the surrounding neighborhoods, school officials said.

“While we cannot bring back Maddie, Kaylee, Xana and Ethan, we can thoughtfully and purposefully carry their legacy forward in the work we do,” University of Idaho President Scott Green said in a statement Dec. 30.

“The next few months will be tough on their friends and families as the legal system begins the process of publicly prosecuting these crimes to bring justice. Let’s keep them in our thoughts and prayers and continue to stand #vandalstrong.”

Incoming University of Idaho freshman Riyan Shrestha, from Nepal, said his parents were worried about letting him travel so far from home amid a murder investigation.

They chose the University of Idaho because it appeared to be in a safe community far from crowded cities and nestled near mountains that reminded them of home. With a suspect charged, their sense of anxiety has given way to excitement for his new life in the United States.

“I honestly am more worried about being homesick,” he said.

The Georgia grand jury conducting a criminal investigation into whether there were any “coordinated attempts to unlawfully alter the outcome of the 2020 elections” in the state by former President Donald Trump and his allies has completed its work, a judge said in a ruling issued Monday.

The grand jury was convened for an investigation into “‘the facts and circumstances relating directly or indirectly to possible attempts to disrupt the lawful administration of the 2020 elections in the State of Georgia’ and to prepare a report on whether anyone should be prosecuted for such potential crimes,” Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney recounted in a ruling.

His ruling dissolved the panel because it has completed its work and submitted its report on its findings to the Fulton County district attorney’s office. The ruling, which was first reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, did not say what those findings were.

“The Court thanks the grand jurors for their dedication, professionalism, and significant commitment of time and attention to this important matter. It was no small sacrifice to serve,” the judge wrote.

The special purpose grand jury is different than a typical grand jury — it submits its findings in a report to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who then decides whether to present evidence to a grand jury for criminal indictments.

A spokesperson for Willis declined to comment. A spokesperson for Trump also did not immediately return a request for comment.

Willis called for the special grand jury last year because the panel had the power to issue subpoenas to force witnesses to testify. Among those who were questioned about their efforts to overturn results in the state were Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who’d been pressured by Trump and his allies to alter the outcome of the 2020 election, also testified.

Among the incidents Willis is reviewing is Trump’s Jan. 2, 2021, phone call with Raffensperger in which he urged the state’s top election official to overturn Joe Biden’s win. “All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state,” Trump said in the call.

Trump has maintained he did nothing wrong in the Raffensperger call and described it as “perfect.”

It’s unclear when the grand jury report might become public. The judge scheduled a hearing on whether it should be. McBurney’s order said the grand jury “certified that it voted to recommend that its report be published.”

Blayne Alexander and Charlie Gile contributed.

Chaos struck Brazil’s capital Sunday when supporters of far right former President Jair Bolsonaro descended on government buildings, breached them, climbed on a rooftop and broke windows.

Video depicted damage to an office in the presidential palace, as well as broken windows in the country’s highest court.

Leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, sworn in Jan. 1, responded by authorizing federal intervention in the Federal District until the end of January.

He called those who attacked Congress “fascists,” according to translations of his tweets Sunday.

“Whoever did this will be found and punished. Democracy guarantees the right to free expression, but it also requires people to respect institutions,” Lula tweeted. “There is no precedent in the history of the country what they did today. For that they must be punished.”

Authorities used tear gas and clashed with the demonstrators, according to video from the scene distributed by news organization Reuters.

Many among the demonstrators wore the national colors of Brazil, yellow and green, associated in recent years with Bolsonaro supporters.

Lula visited the scene of the unrest late Sunday, Brazil’s TV Globo reported.

Ibaneis Rocha, the governor of Brazil’s capital district, said more than 400 people involved in the demonstrations and breaches have been arrested.

He said authorities continued to work to restore order. Rocha described the day’s events as acts of terrorism.

The incidents, which recalled the Jan. 6, 2021, invasion of the U.S. Capitol, come amid disinformation about the election, aimed mostly at Lula.

“The electoral cycle was marked by the use of public resources for campaigning and a sophisticated disinformation network,” the nonprofit Carter Center said in November after having observed the presidential election.

“Most attacks targeted the Lula campaign,” it said.

Lula accused the mob of taking advantage of the quiet Sunday as his administration was still moving into government. He then took direct aim at Bolsonaro.
